Tiger & Black Tip Sharks

The coast of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa, has become one of the hottest spots on the planet to dive with tiger sharks. Unlike diving with tiger sharks in the Bahamas the impressive tiger sharks at Aliwal Shoal are often accompanied by large numbers of smaller black tip sharks – and their numbers make the dive even more dramatic.

This dive is accessible to all divers and surface snorkelers but it is important that you feel comfortable in the water, do not have a tendency to panic and have excellent buoyancy control.

The sharks are attracted by the smell of bait enclosed in a metal drum, but at no time are they fed.

There are a number of operators that launch from the small seaside town of Umkomaas but only one offers the PADI approved Tiger Shark Specialty course. To compliment your tiger shark diving experience this course includes in depth lectures about tiger shark behaviour, population dynamics at Aliwal, tiger shark biology and conservation.
